Immigrant families of Deaf and hard-of-hearing children often face unique challenges when navigating educational systems in the United States. In addition to learning a new school system, families may encounter language barriers, limited access to information in their preferred language, unfamiliarity with Deaf education options, cultural differences in perceptions of disability and deafness, and difficulties communicating with schools and service providers.

This worskshop will explore the most common barriers immigrant families experience during school enrollment and throughout their child’s educational journey and provide actionable strategies for educators, interpreters, advocates, and service providers to improve communication, build trust, and create more equitable and accessible support systems for immigrant families of Deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
