Students with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are frequently misunderstood in educational settings because they often appear to “hear normally” in quiet one-on-one situations. However, research and classroom experience consistently demonstrate that UHL can significantly impact listening effort, language development, incidental learning, fatigue, localization of sound, classroom participation, and academic outcomes.

This workshop will help educators, related service providers, interpreters, administrators, and family members better understand the real-world educational impact of unilateral hearing loss. Participants will explore how auditory access changes across environments, why many students with UHL are overlooked for support, and what meaningful educational accommodations and services actually look like in practice.
