Apps As Interactive Tools To Promote Listening and Language

Presented by

Lynn A. Wood, MA CCC/A LSLS Cert. AVT

Apps are valuable tools to enhance listening, build language, literacy, and communication skills for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. If you own a device that runs apps, you have outstanding resources for listening and learning possibilities at your fingertips (and at the child’s fingertips too). The workshop’s teaching points include Apps With A Plan, Auditory Strategies and Techniques, Tips for Students using Apps, and the Explode the App approach. The workshop includes a practical hands-on experience allowing participants to Explode a few apps while collaborating with other participants. Bring your iPad or tablet loaded with your favorite apps and be ready to learn planning tools and strategies that focus on Talk-time, not Screen-time.

Learner Outcomes:

The participant will be able to:

1) summarize considerations when using apps with children and teens with hearing loss

2) describe the Apps With A Plan process, tips, and strategies to build listening, language, and communication skills when using iPads and tablets

3) explain the Explode The App approach and how well-chosen apps are “exploded” as part of a lesson that included related traditional books, songs, games, and learning extension activities.
