Digging Deeper: Legal Issues Supporting Students with Hearing Loss

Teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing already know about the IDEA special education law and how it guides the provision of services. There are important aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act and some key case law court cases that teachers also need to be aware of as they provide specific information on access, supports, and services relevant to students with hearing loss. This presentation will provide an overview of information this information that is beyond IDEA.

Target audience: Administrators, family members, and professionals who work with children with hearing loss.

Participants will be able to:

1) Describe the special considerations factors specific to students with hearing loss and how this clause relates to providing a free and appropriate public education
2) Describe the policy clarification of the Americans with Disabilities Act specific to students with hearing loss and how to integrate this information in evaluations and service provision
3) Describe aspects of case law court cases relevant to the appropriate provision of services to students who are hard of hearing and deaf
