Do the Cue! Providing Equitable Access to Phonemes Through Cued Speech (3 Part Training)

**Included in the Professional Academy**

Join us for this three-part training for professionals and parents who are interested in learning about cued speech: the research behind it, how the cued speech system is set up, and why and how to apply it to support phonemic awareness skill development in DHH children.

Cued Speech was developed by Dr. Orin Cornett at Gallaudet University in 1966 specifically to teach Deaf children how to read. Rather than being confined to reading instruction, families and teachers began using
cued speech to facilitate spoken language with DHH children with good outcomes.

Here's what will be covered

Sept 4: Part 1

  • Research supported rationale for Cued Speech
  • A brief overview of the Cued Speech system along with videos showing cued speech being implemented with DHH children.

October 2: Part 2

  • Fundamentals of Cued Speech

November 6: Part 3

  • Activities to practice the use of cued speech with targeted phonemic awareness activities.
  • Examples of phonemic awareness skills being taught in Foundations for Literacy for DHH Children and Gen Ed reading curriculum.
  • Ways to utilize CS with other team members (SLP, reading specialist, etc.) if the TOD does not work with the student(s) more than once or twice per week.
