Bring Sound to Children in Cozumel

On October 15–16, 2026, a volunteer team of audiologists, teachers of the deaf, interpreters, and other support professionals will travel to Cozumel, Mexico to provide much-needed hearing screenings and diagnostic hearing testing for children on the island.

For many children, this event may be the first step in identifying hearing loss and understanding the support they need to access language, learning, and communication more fully. During these two days, our team will work to screen children, complete hearing testing when needed, and help identify those who may benefit from ongoing hearing support.

This October clinic is only the beginning.

In January 2027, during the Deaf Education Conference and Networking Cruise, our team plans to return to Cozumel while the cruise is in port. At that time, and pending island access and final logistics, we plan to provide hearing aid fittings and dispensing for children who qualify, along with support and education to help families and local partners better meet these children’s hearing and communication needs.

Our goal is not simply to visit, but to help build a bridge to better access, stronger support, and greater opportunity for children with hearing loss in Cozumel through on ongoing relationship with The Online Itinerant.

Whether you are interested in referring a child, volunteering, partnering, or supporting this effort, we invite you to join us.

HOW THE CLINIC WORKS

STEP 1:

Dates: October 14-17

During this time, the goal is to provide otoscopic exams, pure tone audiometry, bone conduction testing and typanometry.  Plans are in place to provide free hearing aids to those who qualify, and workshops to parents, caregivers and teachers on how to maintain equipment and develop communication and language skills to these children.

**The Cozumel Service Project scheduled for January 16 during the Deaf Education Conference and Networking Cruise is dependent on the ship successfully docking in Cozumel. While every effort will be made to carry out services as planned, unforeseen conditions (such as weather or port restrictions) may prevent docking.

In the event this occurs, all donated hearing aids will still be delivered in person at a later date to ensure that children receive the support they need.
