This two-part workshop will equip you with data collection tools for skills that may be challenging to measure such as self-advocacy, vocabulary, qualitative growth in academic subjects, and repairing communication breakdowns. 

We will dig into our data collection plans and then discuss applying your data to writing present levels and goals. and review the most common reasons IEPs are often out of compliance and a checklist you can keep to monitor compliance with your own IEP writing.

The participant will be able to:

1) State at least two examples of how to measure baseline skills and collect data to monitor progress toward IEP goals.

2) Write data-driven present levels aligned with SMART goals.

3) State at least two common IEP compliance issues and how to ensure they are writing compliant IEPs.  

Kaitlyn Millen

Kaitlyn Millen is a special education consultant, supporting teachers with writing data-driven, compliant IEPs. She completed her PhD in special education focused on self-determination and students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) at the University of Northern Colorado and her master’s degree in education of students who are DHH at Smith College. Kaitlyn worked as a teacher of students who are DHH in Massachusetts and established summer camps for students who are DHH in Massachusetts and Colorado. Her research is published in journals including the American Annals of the Deaf and the Journal of Special Education. She has also led expeditions with students who are DHH in the Grand Canyon, Nepal, and Peru. In her spare time, Kaitlyn enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and skiing.
