Teacher Inservice: A First Step Towards Effective Collaboration

Learning issues that often can be observed in a student with hearing loss can be mistaken for lack of motivation, attention issues, learning disabilities, or other educational problems that are much more prevalent than being deaf or hard of hearing. Due to hearing loss being a low-incidence disability, many classroom teachers are not well-informed about the challenges and needs of these students. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of how professionals experienced in the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing can approach teachers to increase their understanding of the needs of these students and set the stage for effective collaboration with the DHH specialist.

Learning Objectives:

The participant will be able to:

1) Describe adult learning principles as related to communicating with teachers about their student with hearing loss.

2) Describe inservice activities into distinct steps and provide examples of information that can be shared at each step.

3) Participants will be able to access resources available to inform the classroom teacher of student issues related to hearing loss as a way to set the stage for effective collaboration
