Understand, identify and articulate the role of the Teacher of the Deaf and how that role merges with the responsibilities of the Interpreter, Audiologist, and General Education and Special Education Teachers.

(Approximately 30 Minutes)

Target audience:  Administrators, professionals and parents of a children with hearing loss.

Learner outcomes:

1.  Learners will be able to identify the evolution of the DHH teacher and how the itinerant model came to be.

2.  Learners will be able to identify 8 areas of expertise that are unique to the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

3.  Learners will be able to identify their own role and responsibilities on the IEP team and will be able to explain how they partner with others in meeting the needs of a DHH student

Stefanie Kessen, creator of The Online Itinerant, has over 20 years experience working with students with hearing loss and building relationships with the team that supports those children. She has been a teacher of all ages, from birth through college age, and works with both signing and oral students of all backgrounds. Stefanie has trained many professionals on working with students with hearing loss from around the state of Wisconsin and the U.S. Her favorite passion is empowering others to feel confident in their role - either as teachers, students, interpreters, or family members.
